First, not very knowledgable about networking, standards, etc.

So, given that, here's my question: I currently have cable modem, 5mbps service, and a wireless router of the 'g' standard. With my girlfriends laptop, I get downloads of about 4800 kbps.

Just got new laptop that has 'n' wireless. Any idea what speeds I could obtain downloads if I upgrade to a 'n' router? Any recommendations on brand/model? I'l like to keep it at affordable as possible, definitely less than $200.

Also, cable company has just advertised 16 mbps service. is 'n' standard capable of those speeds wireless, or would I still get faster speeds plugging the network cable right into the laptop for large downloads? Trying to decide where to locate the router in my house.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Lets see your 11g is 54mbps (30mbps throughput) and your service is 5mbps. I don't see see a need, unless your moving large files wirelessly on your private network.
