I have a laptop that is hooked up to a wireless rooter. I also have a desktop pc that is not hooked up to the internet at all. I was told to buy a "blue cable" and then connect the two and I could use the PC like an external harddrive. Well, I hooked up the "blue cable" to both and nothing. What am I doing wrong. I want to put dvd shrink on the PC so it won't take so long on my laptop. Can anyone help me? Thanks

    1) Is this an Ethernet cable? If so, continue.
    2) Is the cable plugged in correctly to a router and PC ethernet port?
    3) Does the computer load up the OS and get a connection (to the Internet probably)?
    4) How do you want to access that PC? File sharing enabled? Or remote desktop? Or something else?

I think its an ethernet cable. I plugged it into the side of my laptop and it fit in the jack with the "signs of computers attached together".
I then plugged it into the same size outlet on the back of the pc.
Then nothing. No bells, no whistles.

I want to be able to send files from my laptop to the pc, and then be able to access them from my laptop.
    Frustrating

I've never actually heard of connection of a laptop to a pc directly, but if you want to NETWORK, I can help do that. You would need to first connect the PC to the wireless router with the blue cable though, and not the laptop to the pc.

With a network you can use the wireless router to transfer information via public folder that you would have open on your pc, so you can wirelessly transfer information to your pc from your laptop and vice versa. Or connect both to the router and transfer that way.

btw when you say blue cable I hope you mean an ethernet cable. If you do not want to setup a network you can directly connect the pc and the laptop, however you will need a crossover ethernet cable.

After purchasing said cable you will need two network cards (if both can connect to the internet then you have network cards). After that you need to configure each computer to have a certain IP so they can see eachother. Once that is completed you will be able to see each others public folders.

I got the info http://www.home-network-help.com/crossover.html here, so check that out and see if it helps =).
