what i want to do is have my own home server made from an older computer that would be connected (by wire) to my router. I would like this server to backup my laptop that would be wirelessly connected to the same router at every shutdown (of the laptop), and it should only backup the files that have been modified/added on my laptop's hard drive.

    Is this possible?

also, please note that i have both linux and windows XP on my laptop. Linux holding the important files that must be backed up, XP doesnt need to be backed up, but it would be nice.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to do this or if it is even possible they would be greatly appreciated.

(the above plan is just a desired plan, if some things must be modified so i can make the backups it should be alright)

Set your server to be a FTP server, War FTP is a good one (Free). Most BU programs support the ftp protocol. Then execute it on shutdown, put in shutdown folder. For XP or maybe Vista, Synctoy from MS is a good little backup program, FREE. There are many available for linux

Retrospect is another program for Mac and PC backup. It will give you a lot better control the Synctoy.

I use Digital Dolly and shoot a image file to my servers. This gives me a quick start point where I do not have to re-install software, Then use a backup program for only data files.
