    hi well i want to reformat my vostro 400 desktop with xp and i want to back up my music and videos. so i just wanted to put everything on my laptop. i was gonna create a file server but dont know how. were not on a wireless network yet cuz we dont have a wireless router yet. were on a wired router though. were using a trendnet router to route the internet

    No need to setup special file servers, you can use Windows built-in file sharing. Right click on the folder you want to share > Properties > Sharing and Security > Share this folder. Enter a share name and give permissions to everyone or selected users. Then access your desktop from the notebook by typing \\desktop_name or \\IP_of_the_desktop in Windows explorer address bar. If you share the folder to a specific user then you have to give the user name and password when prompted.

    wow ok thx but how do u figure out the desktop name or ip of the desktop?

    To find out the computer name of the desktop : Right click on My computer > Properties > Computer Name > Change; use the existing name, no need to change it.
    To find out the IP : type ipconfig at the command prompt.
