Hey all, I was wondering if I'd be able to plug in the cable modem into the internet slot on the router, then have all of my laptops and desktop pickup the wireless connections through that. That way no one can tamper with the router if I put it in the closet or whereever else. Is that doable in any way?

Umm...yes it's doable if u don't mind degrading the signal quality by putting the router in the closet; and also the desktop would need a wireless card installed. [If it's going to be connecting wirelessly as well that is] If not u can always connect it via ethernet cable.

Sure, that is how it is usually done. Plug the ethernet cable from the cable modem into the internet port on the router, follow the instructions included to set up the router (pretty easy), and then your laptops should be able to search for the router and connect. The desktop will have to have a wireless card to connect as will the laptops. The desktop could also be connected to the router with another ethernet cable if you wish.

The only problem is I don't have the setup cd for the router, any way to do it manually?

    You threw it away?

I don't think you need it. Just configure the router by logging into it's configuration page using it's default gateway/IP address...you don't have the instructions either? what brand/model router?

Well I just moved into a house in Atlanta that had a dsl connection, just got comcast cable, and the router has been here for awhile I'm guessing. It's a WRT54G V 5

Awesome! Log in to the router by entering 192.168.1.1 in the web browser. You'll need to configure it's Internet Address, DHCP, and some form of security like WPA.

And you should upgrade to firmware V6 also.

EDIT: A bunch of info. HERE....

If you get the router version number from the sticker on the router itself, you should be able to download the manual from the manufacturer's website.
