I think you can connect the normal Ethernet cable to the xbox , but u will need to extend a cable from upstairs to ur xbox room downstairs which i think will ruin ur life :D .
I recommend buying a good Access point that will be able to give u wireless connection for a large area

for the cable IF there is a slot for the cable in the back of the xbox , you will need to connect a very long cable called ethernet cable from your router room to your xbox room , which mean cable will pass through all the way to your xbox if you are not OK with that , than you will need a wireless router , you have a router so u don't need a device called wireless router you just need a device that makes you PCs or xbox connect to your router wirelessly , this device is called access point ( that a wireless router without the routing feature which will be done by the other router :D )
    hope u understand anything

A wireless router or AP upstairs, not connected to your existing router in any way, obviously can't get your Xbox onto the internet. So you would have to run a cable between the two routers. But then you could just plug the cable directly into the Xbox, enjoy a faster and more reliable connection on the Xbox, and save yourself the money for the second router.

If you can't/don't want to run a cable, consider replacing your existing router with one that includes wireless support.
