You may need to wait for some Mac owners who know more about networking on a Mac environment, but how are you trying to connect? Are you going through a router or are you using a crossover cable?

Has file and printer sharing been enabled on the desktop?

Have you actually enabled one or more drive shares?

Have you tried a direct connection to the XP machine using its IP address? (to find out the IP address, just go to start -> run -> "Cmd" -> and type in ipconfig, followed by enter)
