OK, so FINALLY got my nc6000. am in the process of setting up the router at home, so i can do the wi-fi thing at home. is there anything i need to do to the laptop itself, to get online at home or in a public hotspot? also, as for the public hotspots, what do i need to do security-wise?
almost there! thanks for all your help!!

It is difficult to answer this question because there are different wireless options with the nc6000 and we are not quite sure what you bought. Assuming you have an 802.11 b/g device, then you are pretty much ready to go for public hotspots. In order to use it at home, you will need either an "access point" or a wireless router (which is really a router with an integrated access point).

so would you advise against whipping out the charge card in a public spot? what about email?

The only thing you really need to do is to know that there really isn't much security.

Sorry for the lack of details. Yes, it does have the b/g. We managed to get the router set up at home, and connected wirelessly last night - pretty darn cool. So now it has virus software. Is there anything I need to do when connecting at a public place, security-wise?

Actually, I wouldn't advise against whipping out the credit card. In fact, I use public networks with some regularity. I would simply caution that there isn't a lot of security. For me, that's no big deal. If someone wants to read my email as it comes across the airwaves, I feel sorry for them because it's pretty darn dull. If they want to read the pages I surf, that's equally dull. If they want to watch, they can be my guest. Where it might get dicey is accessing banking sites and things like that. If you are security conscience, you might not want to pay your bills from the airport. Although even that isn't as dangerous as it might sound. Although there is no encryption on the wireless link those sites typically are SSL encrypted by the browser. A determined crook likely could get to your info if he wanted but the reality is there are far easier ways for a criminal mastermind to make a few bucks. All-in-all, it isn't very secure but I'm not sure it matters all that much to me. Whether it matters to you is a decision you'll have to make for yourself.

for web surfing, it's fine, but if I'm going to check my mail or buying thing online, I'll VPN back to myhouse, then go to secure site, and order.

thanks to both of you - that's what i was wondering about. email i'm not so worried about, but for online buying (which is pretty rare anyway) or banking, i'll wait til i'm wired.
got the laptop, now...
