    hi there,

so i have a linksys wireless-g router with an ethernet cable connected to my cable modem and another ethernet cable connected to the desktop pc. i installed the wireless-g network adapter in one laptop, and the other laptop has a built in adapter.

the only "security" thing i've done is change the ssid (which i'm broadcasting right now). everything else i've left as whatever it was when i got it.

when i go to the laptops, they both say they have an excellent wireless connection. but when i open my browser, it says i'm not connected. what do i do????

    thanks!

ok, i just tried running network setup wizard again, and i don't know what i did differently but it seems to be working now.

now... let's try to make this more secure. =o)

    sorry, if i'm spamming... but...

anyways, i've stopped broadcasting the SSID and i've enabled WEP.

now, Laptop#1 connects to the internet fine, but when i go to My Network Places, it only sees itself. It doesn't see the desktop or the other laptop.

Laptop#2 can't connect to the network anymore because it can't detect it. (It detects the neighbours fine, but not mine. Aargh!) I've put in the password many different times, and I'm pretty sure it's right. Maybe the built-in network card doesn't support WEP? How do I check this? But I just bought this laptop last week, WEP is pretty standard now, isn't it? It's a Compaq Presario R3000z.

The network cards will support WEP, you just have to enable it.

    1. Make sure your Workgroup is all the same for each system
    2. Make sure your XP firewall is disabled on all systems (don't need it on because your router has a hardware firewall)
    3. Make sure you're using WEP 128bit on all the systems
    4. Check to see if the Active Key is on the right one (1 to 4)
    5. Try re-enabling SSID Broadcast, some network cards won't work without this on

    Hope this helps.
