I have a Microsoft wifi setup that works okay, but I want to improve the range at the back of my house. The router doesn't have a removable antenna or antenna jack, so I haven't been able to find a simple device to extend the range. Is there a cheap device that helps extend the range even though I don't have an antenna input? Is there a device like a repeater that I could place in another room that will extend/boost my original wifi signal? I'm not sure the cantenna will work since (1) I don't have an antenna jack, and (2) I'm worried this will make the signal too directional, i.e. I'll lose signal in other areas of the house to strengthen it one area.

Amazing what a little searching will turn up. These aren't really cheap solutions, though.

Repeaters do exist. HERE is a link to a decent article describing the good and bad of this type of solution:

Here http://www.freeantennas.com/ is a good source with explanations of a variety of reflectors you can add to direct the beam where you need it.

tip: keep bluetooth and home cordless phones (2gig models) away.

I remember my friend once sent me a link for designing some sort of contraption to place around your AP to extend its range. Don't know if it works. Anyway I'll ask him if he still has the link!
