does it need to connect via ethernet to the modem or can it be purely wireless?

If the modem transmitted wirelessly, you wouldn't need the router. Or you can get a modem/wireless router

i have a regular dsl modem, and a dlink dir-625 draft n. i really don't know much about this stuff as this is my first experience setting this up. i've had it up and running for a couple of weeks, but a friend of mine told me a wireless router could connect to the dsl modem and to the computer, completely untethered...

There has to be a way for the data to go from the modem to the router lol. If the modem does not have WiFi built in you will have to string a cable.

Unfortunately, your friend doesn't appear to know precisely what he's talking about. If your modem already included wireless capability, you wouldn't need an additional wireless router and your laptop would "see" the wireless signal being broadcast by the modem - if you don't see such a signal, then you need to have the wireless router wired into the modem using an ethernet cable.

    Okay heres the deal:

Some "modems" you get from your dsl provider are actually modems AND routers all in one box. This is the case if it is giving off a wireless signal.

Other modems you get are just a pure modem nothing else.

That said, you need to figure out what you have first before we can continue because they will be setup differently.
