We want to get a wireless router cause its a pain disconnecting my Ethernet cable from my laptop to my xbox to my desktop. But people tell me routers lower your internet speed. I dont think wireless will affect my speed becauseall my stuff will be o more than 6 feet away from it. So do routers kill internet speed? I have qwest dsl 1.5M

No, not at all. Unless you have wireless G and more than a 54 meg connection which you say you dont. You wont notice a thing is different.

Wireless is not good for online games because of the increased latency

Wired ping = 1ms (micro seconds which is like 0.000001 of a second)
    Wireless ping = 1-3ms

    Wired Bandwidth = 100mbps
    Wireless Bandwidth 54mbps

Ive been using wireless for years now. Wireless is just as good as wired for gaming. You wont notice the difference.

Unless your dealing with large sized files, thats when a wired connection is needed.

Agreed. I have a wireless-G router in my apartment and don't notice the difference between wireless and a wired connection.

I would recommend that you get one of the newer 11n routers with the gige lan ports. They are not that much more and provide higher speeds. If your want less lag you will need QoS setup. In the 11g class look at the dlink DGL4300, or DGL-4500 for 11n.
