so i've got the d link xtreme N 655, great router and all...and i got myself the new sager np8660 (m860tu) with an intel wifi link 5300 wireless card (n)

i adjusted all the settings, updated firmware, enabled 40hz, etc. and got the thing running at 300mbps...great and all...but only within about 10ft of the router.... any further and while the signal stays at maximum (excellent, 100%, etc.) the actual internet connection is unresponsive... I disabled 802.11n on my wireless card so that it was forced to run in G and i get a consistent 54mbps 100% all around the house and even faster throughput in terms of actual internet speeds and downloading...any ideas? should i just be waiting for newer router firmware, new wifi card drivers? frustrating! i dig the 300mbps...but not the range and unreliability...

So why is a constant 54mbps a problem? I mean, is your internet connection more than 54mbps or would you be doing network transfers that require more than 54 mbps? :)

why would i not want to take advantage of my wireless n @ 300mbps? it does actually offer faster throughput within 10ft...but i was hoping for the supposed "range increase" as well (

and yes i've tried all those settings and combinations of others...even the ones on my internal wifi card...not sure what the router cypher mode was set to but i doubt it made a difference..

oh and did you put a 7950gtx in that e1705? :p that was my old setup

(btw im a pc technician so ive done my share of troubleshooting, wondering if there are any other ideas besides those settings)

someone who has N experience with that exact router may be of help...

dir 655 xtreme N is the router.

    thanks!

The 5ghz bandwidth does not penetrate things well at all, besides droping fast as distance is increased. If you have any wireless devices it may be intergering with it too. May try the 2.4ghz bandwidth, or switch from wide(40) to narrow (20hz). Narrow should be the def if they follow the spec. With it you should get a min of 130mbps speed.

the dir 655 actually does not support the 5ghz band just 11 channels ~2.4ghz

and yeah i switched it to 20/40 auto...maybe going to 20 only could fix it but it limits to 130mbps... (technically a 144mbps with the router though) which given is still better than G...it's so funky lol

ok yeah so 20hz only makes no diff....N seems to have the 10ft range before IP drops no matter what...

That sounds like a major driver problem, contact them for support and get the latest, even beta if they offer.

Add the encryption in, I remember reading that 11n spec was designed with it. It's possiable that intel made it mandantory for 11n. wpa2 aes on the newer hardware.

reset the router to factory and try again. Who knows it's brains ma be a little loose.

Yes, the WPA mode makes a big difference. WPA2 with AES are very important settings. Also - have you checked for newer firmware?

yeah i even used the 1.20 beta it's on WPA/WPA2 auto and AES/TKIP auto to allow the other pcs on my network to connect to it...(their g cards don't support WPA2) but i've tried it with just my comp on it and it made no difference...i may try to RMA the router...maybe it's the radio for N broadcasting..

It sounds like something is wrong. I get 100% signal strength when I'm over 40 ft away from the router, two rooms away.

If they don't support WPA2 drop back to WPA AES is better than tkip.

If you look at Smallnetbuilder site on their testing you will find that mixed mode is terrible on all of the routers tested with 11n. But remember firmware can change very fast. You would be better using you old router as a 11g AP. and restric the 655 to 11n only.

Changed the MTU and a bunch of other settings and now i got it working but the transmission speed must be set to best (automatic)....which is odd....n speed still drops quick but at least it works throughout the house (300mbps right next to the router, 240-270 15ft away, any further it can drop to about 80 or 60 or so) given i'm still running 802.11g and n mixed, n only would probably provide better performance but i dont have my old router for just g...old roommate took it... grr lol
