this has come up before in other posts, but i've read conflicting views and experiences. i've got the dlink dir655 router, and i'm connecting with the intel 6300 adapter in a sager 8170 running windows 7. i'm getting 130 Mbps reported link speed. i've read on nbr that this might be the max that i can with this router-adapter combo, but i've read elsewhere on nbr that some have succeeded in reaching 300 Mbps with this combo. i've tried various wireless settings of the router and the adapter, but no improvement. so any definite word on what is the max speed with this combo, and if it is 300 Mbps any link to a definite howto for achieving this?

300mbps is possible but only if you use 40MHz channel width and you are close enough to the router.
Router also can automatically go back to 20MHz if there are other networks in the neighborhood, so you should use inSSIDer to survey the surroundings. -
thanks for the reply. don't know what i did, but after i ran inssider, my max speed started to get closer to 300 Mbps. it looks to be fluctuating somewhat, but i'm getting 270 Mbps with some regularity, so i'm a happy camper (inssider indicated that the max speed should be 300 Mbps).
Edit/update: well, it seems that i'm back down to 130 Mbps without any change in settings (inssider still says that i should be able to get a max of 300 Mbps - RSSI is about -48). so it seems that speed is quite variable for the same settings. -
Once again it's all about your area. If there's lots of interference then your connection wont be so good even if you have a strong signal! SNR is more important and if that's bad then it dosn't matter how good the signal is.

300 is doable, but only within a few feet and it tapers fast and fluctuates (not to mention it's fickle).
Putting a higher amperage power pack will help... Some, but in general, it just fluctuates. Changing firmware may help, but knowing that router, if it's running and stable, my advice is don't do it.
If you want stability and speed, buy a different router (seriously). -
thanks for all the responses. think i'll stick with the tried and true until dual band routers are a dime a dozen.
curiously, i was happy when i first got the new laptop with the n adapter, and was getting more than twice what i used to get with my old laptop with a g adapter. but then i found out that i should be getting 300 Mbps, and then all happiness was gone. oh well ...
dir655 and intel 6300 max speeds?
