I have a sony SZ6 and has the n wireless network card so technically it should connect to 802.11n but when connected it says 802.11g.

I googled the issue and got this
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935279

How do I check for sure if i am actually connected at 802.11n?

in order to use n - youll have to set up wpa2 as your security measure, im guessing youre using a standard wep key now...

EDIT - go into the security settings of your dir655 router and change it to a wpa2 key - then when you reconnect your laptop, youll have to enter the wpa2 key into it to connect
