dd-wrt router, which one should I choose? WZR-600DHP vs others?

I currently have a D-Link DIR-655 and a Linksys WRT54G that drops connection all the time.

I'm looking to limit the bandwidth to several MAC addresses. I'd also like to get a report on usage by MAC address.

I've read that dd-wrt is what I want to accomplish this. I don't understand how dd-wrt works. Is there a free version and a paid version? It looks like the basic/free version doesn't allow bandwidth metering, so how do I buy the full version? I know if I buy a Buffalo router, it will have the full version with bandwidth metering/limiting built in.

It looks like the Buffalo WZR-600DHP doesn't allow bandwidth limiting by specific MAC address, rather a limit by each and all connected devices. I want to restrict bandwidth to my roommates XBOX that he constantly streams netflix to...but not restrict to my computer etc...

I'm considering either the Buffalo WZR-600DHP or a Netgear WNDR3700v4 or something else...?

A review I read stated the Buffalo had significantly less throughput than the Netgear...

Reviews for the Netgear seem to comment on unreliability.

    Thoughts?
