    system resources != bandwidth

Doesn't matter if the application is a system hog or if it very efficient, that has little to no effect on the bandwidth pipe and how much someone can download.

lala150, unfortunately unless you have a higher priced switch that allows for throttling a specific ports bandwidth, you might be stuck. What type of hardware router/switch do you have at home?

How computer Dad saavy is your father? Can you go into his torrent software and throttle it there? What torrent client is he using?

xYike is right, the best method to help out is to throttle his speed. Most likely throttling his upload speed will help the most. Thats what I've noticed.

tell him to turn on bit torrent on at night or during times where your not using the internet. theres really no way of remedying the situation unless you tell your dad to bump up the internet speed and get a faster package from your ISP

Call the RIAA or MPAA. They'll take care of him good.

thanks for the help. we're using the Linksys WRT300N router. he's using the actual BitTorrent client..the one you get at www.bittorrent.com...not azureus or bitcomet or anything. he's not computer savvy at all so i can definitely go into his torrent software. what should i be looking for though when i go into his computer? what settings can i change in his bittorrent client to make it so it has the least priority. how do i throttle his speed? i can do it for individual torrents..but i have to manually configure it each time. how can i make it so that it automatically stays throttled? thanks again.

get utorrent you can cap the downloads with limits. like 25kbps and even upload speeds! also you can cap the number of peers he can connect and also cap the number of active downloads that he can have. lotsa control for a free torrent client.

In the current version of BitTorrent, you go to View---Settings to adjust both upload and download rate manually, or just leave it on auto to allow BitTorrent to determine the rate based upon detected bandwidth.

Depending on your connection, I'd go with 40kb down and 20kb up. If he isn't used to the speeds he's getting, this is plenty to get the downloads and low enough to not kill what others are doing.

Personally I use uTorrent and I know it has a feature to enable different speeds at different times of the day. I let it go hog wild at night while folks are sleeping and slow it down during the day.

The WRT300N with the stock firmware will not allow you to throtle based on port or IP as far as I know, but you should be able to fix your issue inside the BitTorrent client! GOOD LUCK!

Something else you can do to help is change some settings on the router. It may be getting clogged with so many packets that it ends up making the rest of the network's internet unusable.

If you can change the number of maximum ports, and TCP/UDP timeout, do it. Jump the maximum ports as high as you can get it, and get the TCP/UDP timeouts to 600-800 (May need to adjust them to make sure everything works).

Doing this on my Buffalo router (With DD-WRT) let me download at a constant 800KB/s via torrent on my main box, and still be able to do my other stuff in a browser on two other machines with minimal slowdown.

I'd also put a cap on his download bandwidth, but doing the above will help.

How bout you go out and get a job and get your own internet connection instead of *****ing about your dad (the one who actually pays for the internet) stealing your bandwidth.

Limit his upload speed, that should make it more bearable. And I think you can do it on the WRT300n, IIRC it was possible on the 350n with stock firmware

I would also inform him of the legal aspects of downloading copyrighted material (software and music). It is a lot cheaper to buy than get caught. And they are slowly closing all of the BT down.

just sneakily pull the cable out that connects his computer to the internet when he's not using it. If he's using wireless get yourself a wire and turn off the wireless and say there is something up with the router. Keep turning it back on and off so it doesnt get suspicious lol
