    cross over cable or patch?

    i am moving into a dorm for college and they said i need an ethernet cable to plug into the wall to hook up my laptop. im not familar with networks and anything like that but ive heard there are two diff types of cables, cross over cable and i think patch. can i use either to hook up to the wall into my laptop for internet access?

    you want a regular rj-45/ethernet cable. a crossover cable won't work.

    how can i tell what cable i have? on the cable itself it saysa cat. 5 utp 24awg 4 pairs along with some other stuff

    Crossover cables are usually labeled as such on the cable itself, so you're probably OK. If you hold the ends of the cable up side by side, you'll see the colored wires in the cable going into the clear plastic RJ45 connector. If they're in the same order on each end, that's a regular network cable.

    yeah when i hold up both ends of the cable it goes black white green white blue white red white. same thing on both ends. so i guess ill be fine to plug it into the wall and use internet with it?
