thats all i know for the moment and im relatively new to networking so any advice or suggestions are welcome

You have to set Static IP adresses if you want to directly network the two and you don't have a Router. You right click on your network device in Network and Sharing Center-->Manage Network Connections and hit properties. Then click on IPv4 and hit properties. Then set everything to "use this address" and enter in these sample IP addresses that I am providing you:

    For your PC:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Pref. DNS: (It's either the same as the gateway but I think you can type in something like say 4.2.2.2)
    Alternate DNS: 4.2.2.1

    XBOX:
    IP Address: 192.168.1. 2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Pref. DNS: (It's either the same as the gateway but I think you can type in something like say 4.2.2.2)
    Alternate DNS: 4.2.2.1

Hit "advanced" on your PC and click on the "WINS" tab. set NetBIOS to ENABLE.

This should probably work. This is how I was able to have a StarCraft LAN party at school with 4 other friends using a 5 port Linksys Ethernet hub that I modded to be powered by a USB port. If you configure everything on both the PC and the XBOX manually and it still doesn't work, then you might need a crossover ethernet cable. But the best, hassle free solution is to get a wireless router. Hope this helps.

If you have gigabit ethernet on your notebook, then you don't need a crossover cable. But to directly connect the two devices through a single cable, you do need to manually setup the IP addresses as described by Jstn7477.

Then will you be using media center or media player 11 to share the files?

I stream movies to my xbox also. It does take a few tries to get everything running correctly. Getting a router will be the best and easiest way to stream to your xbox.

How ever you decide to link up to your xbox, goto network and sharing menu. And make sure that Media Sharing is on. If you click on change and your xbox is on, your xbox should show up in the "share my media to" box. Then click "allow" to share this devise.

Media center works pretty good. But I have better luck with Tversity.
Its at Tversity.com Visit the site and read through the tutorials on how to best setup tversity. If you have any questions just ask.
