Turn on file and printer sharing on your desk top PC. Then select the printer and make it shared. Then use add a network shared printer wizard and see if it shows up. Make sure both pc are in the same work group.

Another way you could also do it instead of going to the add a network shared printer wizard you can just go to start>Run> and put \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx the x's being the IP address of the computer that has the printer. You will than see an Icon for the printer all you have to do is double click that to connect to the printer. Than go to the top of that window where it says printer click that on the dropdown menu just click "Set as Default Printer". I always do it like this simply because I hate the network printer wizard and the fact that there are too many printers on my network to scroll through all of them.

Sharing the printer like that though, your desktop will have to be turned on for the laptop to print. This is also assuming your laptop and desktop are connected on the same network.

Is the printer being shared on your desktop? is it running XP or Vista?
