    Hello

I bought a macbook today and have not been able to get the wireless internet working.

The airport card can see the network but when I input the wep key I just an error message saying it cannot connect. I know the wep key is correct and I also know that the router works (typing this on my windows machine using it now).

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Neil

are you using WEP? or WPA? WEP is obsolete unless you have an obsolete 802.11b access point.

A little information would be nice. What version of OSX? What make/model access point? What firmware on the access point?

We can't help you much when you don't provide any information.

    Hello,

I am using wep 128 bit, the macbook is brand new on tiger. The wireless router is a belkin wireless g+ mimo, the internet connection is cable (virgin media).

Is it worth trying wpa then?

    Thanks

    Neil

If everything on your network supports WPA, then yes, it would be a good idea to try this. In my experience not only is WPA more secure than WEP, it is much easier to get setup. I could never get WEP to work on every device on my network at the same time, either the TiVo or the Mac would not connect. I recently got a new router and switched to WPA and it was a breeze to setup, the only problem is that the wireless adapter in my PC does not support WPA, so no internet for my laptop for the moment.

if you're using OS X i think you have to put a $ before the WEP-key, if it's hexa, or something like that. i'm not quite sure, but it's worth a try.

Like lupin said I would change over to WPA. Then it will connect with no issues. I think Flyt is correct on passing hex code. I have never had any luck on WEP setup unless it'a a 11b router.

11n achieves its best secured speeds with WPA2, and falls back to 802.11g speeds when WEP is used. So use WPA

I have solved the problem and for anybody who experiences the same thing the solution was very simple and was to insert a $ symbol immediately before typing the wep key.

I still think I will change to wpa but as it was working ok last night did not want to change anything!
