Hi all. So this is a question referred to a desktop. It runs on Windows XP SP2. Its connected to an ethernet cable

The Internet provider is Yahoo High speed.

So I thought that releasing and renewing Ip address would work. I released it but could not renew it. It said this "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area connection: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket".

Whats also wierd is that my desktop recgonizes itself as connected. When I go to Networks, through control panel it says connected. But I cant go online. So im stuck in a rump. Its also obvious that I have access to the internet through my laptops. The Internet IS working just not for this computer. Help would be great. Thanks

    Happy holidays

    Try this:

"1.Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.

    2.Click Run... on this menu.

3.If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.

4.Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).

5.If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

6.Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address)."

Did you install the Guided Help and the XP Support Tools, and then follow step 1 (or just follow step 2 if you don't have the Tools installed)?

How did it get into this state?
Does your ISP / Router has a limit on the amount of IP's served on 1 connection?

What has happened since the last time you had an internet connection? 'The message "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" seems like a corrupted TCP communication stack.

If you know the date where it worked and can go back to a system restore point before this day, i'd suggest have a go at that.

Otherwise, try and download the driver package for the network card you're using from the Network Card manufacturer and install it.

Id say it happened four days ago. How do I restore it back to that day?

Ill try to install drives later.

    Thanks for help.

Check for the specific device in the properties dialog box for the NIC, which you can get to through the device manager.

Check DNS config or reinstall ethernet card.
