I assume the router is set to allow a/b/g to connect and be discoverable

Try Resetting your router completely.
(Hold Small Reset Button on back for at least 30 seconds)
It will set everything back to factory defaults. Then try. -

You might need to verify it in the Device Manager. Open it up from the Control Panel, find the Adapter, and if it has a black arrow in a white circle pointing down, it's disabled. Right click on the adapter and select Enable to turn it on.
The switch is typically on the top of the notebook, or activated with an F-key combination - check your manual, the ASUS support site, or the ASUS owners' thread here.
Also, you shouldn't get your adapter drivers from the Intel site - they're not generic and won't work the same if your adapter is an ASUS installed part. They usually have a warning to that effect on all their drivers - either you missed it or ignored it. Of course if your adapter is an Intel OEM part and not an ASUS part (OEM and 3rd party units, though they may have the same DNA, aren't exactly the same) you can use the Intel OEM drivers.
You need to get them from the ASUS Support site - they're certified for use with your system configuration.
