    I have been trying to get this problem solved over at techsupportforum.com but they can't figure it out. Perhaps someone here can. I will post what I've done below:
    Computer had a virus with bugs crawling all over screen. Fixed it. but now it won't connect to internet.

    The laptop is a dell inspiron 600m.
    ISP is working for all other computers in house.
    No modem
    connection is through a cat5 cable to the hub which is connected to our wireless radio receiver.
    running window xp home, service pack 2
    The Internet Browsers in use are IE and Firefox.
    When I plug in the cat5 cord it says it is connected but it won't go anywhere online.

    Ping fails.

    Under the device manager there are no flags or errors. it shows the following hardware: Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller
    intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection.

    tried a tcp/ip stack and winsock repair. afterword it showed nothing at all when I tried the ipconfig /all command from the command prompt.

    I tried manually setting the ip and dns but to no avail.

    I cannot see anywireless networks but it does recognize when the cat5 is plugged in. Just won't go anywhere.

    all of the following services ARE started:
    * Computer Browser
    * DHCP Client
    * DNS Client
    * Network Connections
    * Network Location Awareness
    * Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    * Server
    * TCP/IP Netbios helper
    * Workstation
    Antivirus is AVG 8.0 Free.

    Any ideas?

    If using a FW disable or better uninstall for testing.

    Check to make sure you don't have use proxy server box checked.

    post the results of ipconfig /all

    Is the computer getting a l egitimate IP address? And not a 169.254.X.X address.

    Can u ping the computer w/ it's own IP address and get a Reply?

    Did u try ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt?

    Try comparing the IP address settings on the other computers' network cards...set a static DNS IP on the problem computer.

    Matter of fact can u please post the ipconfig /all results here.

    Thank you both for posting, I will answer your questions below in the order they were received. One new thought. When I go to services I notice that the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is on automatic and not started. so I tried to start it and it said
    "Error 10047: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used."

    "If using a FW disable or better uninstall for testing."
    I don't know what this means...

    Check to make sure you don't have use proxy server box checked.
    no proxy service

    post the results of ipconfig /all
    There are no results. It just says "Windows IP Configuration" and then goes back to the command prompt.

    Is the computer getting a legitimate IP address? And not a 169.254.X.X address.
    I suppose so. I set it manually and it didn't work. I manually set the dns. didn't work. I set it to auto. didn't work.

    Can u ping the computer w/ it's own IP address and get a Reply?
    After doing the ip and winsock reset I cannot now get an ip address for the computer. Is there a way besides ipconfig?

    Did u try ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt?
    yes. nothing happened except it went back to cmd prompt.

    Try comparing the IP address settings on the other computers' network cards...set a static DNS IP on the problem computer.
    Did that. didn't work.

    Matter of fact can u please post the ipconfig /all results here.
    see above.

    Okay, this may be your issue. Click Get a cup of coffee or something, sit down and start working.

    Good Luck!

    It seams the virus did more damage than you think. I would bring up the add/remove programs CP then select windows componets. Then remove the network section. Reboot then re-install the network sections that were removed. Hopefully this will reinstall the missing/damaged files. Then check to see if there are updates to what you just did.

    That will be impossible. My sister, whose laptop it is, lost the re-install disk. It's fix it or toss it at this point. :-(
