    can't connect to internet!!

    i just bought a dell e1705 and got it today, i don't have time to go out and buy a router yet, so i just wanted to connect my new laptop to my current cable modem. i tried and it wouldn't work.. do i have to call comcast and tell them i got a new comp?? can sum1 help plz??

    each ISP has different requirements, but it should make no difference if the system connects to the cable modem via a router or direct cable.

    u might want to review the set.up and signon info to ur ISP, reset the cable modem might help

    Comcast uses the mac address of the computer used to setup the account. So if you only are going to use the laptop only yes, they will need to reset the account.

    When you get a modem you will need to clone the mac address of the pc used to setup the account for it to work.

    when you get a router, one of the options (usually in any setup wizards that are included) will be to clone the MAC address of whatever computer is normally hooked up to the cable modem. basically this will make the modem think that the same computer is still hooked up to the modem.
