hey guys, I've been trolling/searching through this site trying to get a solution to my laptop woes and I've given up. I just recently bought an HP G50-111nr laptop during black friday. But I've been trying to get it connect to my LAN network. I don't have a wireless router or network since this is my first laptop and I've only used a desktop up until this point. Everytime I plug the cable into the laptop, it reads a connection, but I can't connect to the internet. Here's what I've done so far:

    1. used windows diagnoses
    2. turned off firewall and windows defender
    3. set lan network to private
    4. did ipconfig/all and copied and pasted the physical address to network adapter
    5. set speed and duplex to 10 full and half and 100 full and half
    6. made sure all cables and cable modem works, it works perfectly on my desktop when i switch back and forth
    7. updated network adapter drivers
    8. allowed network to bootup in bios
    9. turned off wireless connection

BTW, running on a vista home premium(first time user also). I'll be getting a router sometime this week, but I wanted to make sure that the ethernet works just in case I was faster speeds than my wireless(802.11g). Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm open too all solutions/suggestions

Have you tried power-cycling your cable modem? I remember the first time I replaced the direct connection of my cable modem to PC with a wireless router, there was some really bizarre stuff going on (for whatever reason, I couldn't get DHCP) and I had no connection until I power-cycled the cable modem and my router. In this case, you are connecting another machine to your cable modem with a different MAC address, so things may go strangely depending on your ISP and your modem.

You might have to call your ISP and give them the MAC address of your laptop's NIC. It sounds like your ISP has the internet locked to the MAC of your desktop.

you both are spot on. the mac address was hung up on my old computer and all it took was a quick restart on laptop and cable modem to get the connection. something so simple that I overlooked. Thank god for forums. Thank you both very much
