i've gotten connected to free/buy wifi spots and the connection says it's strong, but i cannot get onto the net. it either says it cannot detect network connection or just won't show anything at all. i have connected on some, but not all. yesterday- i got onto one network that i needed a key for and all was well, and then i was in two different places that were both unsecured free access and was having the above problem in both. my access is completely fine on my home wireless network. don't know what else you would need to be able to help- i'm running xp media center. thank you in advance!

most places that provide free access but are giving you the no network detected message have there own accounts so to speak for the people who use the hot spots.

in other words you probably have to get an account.

if thats not it, then I'm clueless to what else it could be.

Check your firewall settings. If the subnet is different than yours, you will need to add it in as a trusted zones.

When you can not connect to www there are a couple of things you need to check.

See if you can ping the router (Gateway IP)
If good See if you can ping yahoo.com
if not try to ping 66.84.234.13

If you can ping yahoo you should have internet access.
If not but can ping 66.84.234.13, this is yahoo IP address. This tells me you DNS server is not working.
If you can not ping Yahoo or it's IP address tells me you gateway is not working.
