Are you using a usb modem? (Speedtouch 330)?

    And who is your ISP?

in my desktop yes i use a usb network card
    my ISP is VISP.net.lb (lebanon)
i am not really an expert in this so i'll tell you how i did my connection on my desktop
i go to network connections and click on set up new connection
connect to the internet>>>>set up my connection manually >>>> connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password
then i leave the isp name blank and i also leave the username and password blank in the next screen
now i open the new connection and write my username / pass and i log in

on my laptop , i plug the cable and the logo " X" marking that my laptop is disconnected from a network go away , so i know i am plugging the cable in the right slot :p
but i cant set up my connection and make it work

check if you need to set the ip & DNS address manually  also click on that X mark so that Vista will try to fix your connection :D

USB Network card? .... So You are connecting to a router which in turn is connected to the Modem...which connects to your ISP independently...here the issue would be with your card connecting to your router I believe?

HOWEVER, you say you are plugging in a cable to your laptop...is this a normal ethernet cable or a USB cable?

Are you sure you are not plugging the modem directly into the computer and having to dial up '0' and authenticate your username and password?

Vista Has PPPoA issues it only allows you to create PPPoE dial ups...there are solutions for this...

No Problem...don't worry about PPPoA in that case...

It seems like this is a DNS issue. Have you tried turning off your modem then waiting for it to reconnect ISP and then plugging the ethernet cable into your computer?

    Its ok.

Ok where exactly does the cable you are plugging into your laptop go....?

Does it go into the wall? If so is it also the same socket you plug your telephone into?

Or is it a dedicated network port for ethernet cables?

Or is it going into a modem/router?

it goes to a certain switch down the street (no router or modem)
i think it's a network for ethernet cables , when i plug the cable in my pc i can see on the network a couple of pcs (same network i guess) , but the problem is that i cant connect to the internet , it's giving me a wrong username and pass when i try to connect while it's working on XP
sorry for this messy infos , but in lebanon it's all mess
if u have any suggestions plz help

OK I see... Yes you are part of a network... You are connecting to the internet through a LAN network.

Click on the LAN settings in XP and make sure they are ALL absolutely identical to the LAN settings in your internet connection settings in Vista.

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings

now make sure ALL the Information is identical to your XP computer click OK and OK again. Close Internet explorer and Open it again... that should work.

ok... hmmm I don't know... if it's saying your login details are incorrect then it is most likely the case...are you sure 100% sure they are right? ...You might have saved your password in XP and since you can't see it maybe you typed it wrong in Vista?

maybe you want to try this solution...

one other thing you might want to try is disabling all your antivirus software and firewalls and try and access the net...if it works, then you know that is the problem

this is also a solution I found from another site...

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

    Reboot the machine.

    No Problem.

    AH HA!

I think I was right in the beginning...it may be this PPPoA thing in Vista...yes wireless router would solve this problem for you because your router would connect to your ISP and you would only have to connect your Vista computer to the router...many people have this set up.

But if you don't want to buy a router there must be a solution somewhere on the net for connecting to your ISP in Vista. ... I had a similar problem with connecting to my ISP in Vista and was about to buy a router (again it worked ok in XP...but not Vista) but I found the correct solution (Vista ISP specific modem drivers from the ISP website that force PPPoA when connecting to the internet) on the net so it works in Vista and XP now and I didn't need to buy a router.

However, the way you connect to the net is definitley different to me (you plug in ethernet cable, I plug in usb modem) so your solution is going to be different...hopefully it's out here somewhere.

    i surely hope that :)
i was told that the visp provider do that , and can only make my con work on 1 mac adress ( 1 pc) and not on another one to prevent ppl from selling internet to others (something like that)
so if i reset my account i will be able to make it work on my lappy and not on the desktop
so if i want to make it work on both i have to buy a router ........
sorry for making you search so hard lol

Its ok no problem, I'm bit busy today but will let you know if I find anything later...

AH if they only allow one mac address then yes I think router would be the solution...try to get a 'N' router if you can.
