cox does offer a home networking service and it does cost more than the basic high speed service. You can go out and purchase your own router and just use thier modem, but then you will get not support from them if you experience connectivity problems. Its really your choice, gl

buy them separetly, it's better this way. You'll still get support for the router by contacting the router's manufacture. For the router I'd recommend Linksys WRT54GL, one of the best routers out there and is not that expensive.

is the linksys good for um, torrents? cause i read in the bittorrent forums that linksys units have issues. also, i'm considering the motorola surfboard 5120 as my cable modem and then purchasing a wireless router.

If you want something for heavy use you should move up to a SMB class router. Your best setup are done with the seperate AP not a combo unit. SMB class routers are design for heavy use. It is more expensive but you want have the overheating problems of residential routers.

The WRT54GL can handle torrents easliey, The linksys router that's not good for torrents is the WRT54G ( V5-V7 ), which I have and keeps on disconnecting and timeouts and stuff because of the crappy hardware of the WRT54G, while the WRT65GL is the one with better hardware software that can handle high traffic. Go to best buy, circuit city ..etc, grab one and check it out, flash the firmware to something like dd-wrt ( google it ) and you'll be set. Another router would be the the buffalo WHR-HP-G54

Read the reviews, flash the firmware to dd-wrt, and this thing is one of the best.

You do not need to worry. Linksys will allow torrent downloads with little or no messing around with router settings.

so what about the modem itself? i'm considering the motorola sb5120 since majority of reviews demonstrate that it's easy and quick to setup and works effeciently.

I think all cable modems can handle 25-35mbps. I have used Linksys cable modem for over 5 yrs and never a problem. Never shut it down, 24/7 operation with UPS backup. I think the only time it was turned off was to an extend power outage (4-5hrs). Just recently moved up to FIOS, which does not require a modem. Most hardware problems can be tracked back to power spikes and dips. I would suggest using one on all pc & network hardware. But it will make you come up with other reason to upgrade or replace equipment.
