ok so my house has cat 5e cables run to almost evry room in the house. the central location for the wires is downstairs in the basement. there are 8 cat 5e cables downstairs. i have a d link 4500 gaming router but i dont want to have it in the basement i want it upstairs where my computer is so it can use game ful for my ps3 360 my laptop ect. would it be smarter to put another router downstairs or a network switch?btw im using shaw nitro internet at the moment and the modem is in the basement.

Putting a switch downstairs means running a wire from your upstairs router to the modem downstairs to get internet. Basically, you'll need a wire running from the switch downstairs to your router upstairs, then you'll need another wire running back down to the modem downstairs. I'm assuming all the modem has built in is just an ethernet port and there is no wireless.

It will be easier to have your router downstairs. If you laptop and PS3 are sharing a wire, then you'll need a switch there.

You can either put your router on the basement or a switch

Basement Modem --> Basement switch ---> Room gaming router --> PS/3 and your notebook

The rest of the computers in your house will be connected off the Basement switch.

I dought if if ISP will allow more than 1 IP address. Installing a switch straight off his modem will not do the NAT required to share a connection. Now it he moves the router upstairs he will need to make a loop back to the basement to connect the switch, to pick up the other drops. This will require 2 cat5e cables to his room.

You need the Router between the modem and the switch.

Blue's alternative only needs one router. But it requires an wire running from your room to the basement modem. I would just put the router downstairs and the switch in your room. That is the most efficient way to do things.

I'm not sure if your router can do this, but you can have your router give bandwidth priority to your computer and PS3, over other computers.

Sorry let me re-do the diagram

You can either get a new router or switch.

If you want your gaming router in your room then you will need a new router for the basement.

I wish i had Visio at home to do the diagrams properly.

Ever thought of going wireless? Personally id install a wireless router to give me freedom around the house.

well thats like thing my*rig* is installed in our bonus room. I guess I could install the modem upstairs but then I wouldnt be using cat 5e so my mom and others can get internet which i dont think i would / couldnt do unless i bought them all wireless adapters :/ and then it would have been a waste of the cat 5e i installed. I have a dlink 4500 its a gaming router so it give priorities to games. its gigabit and wirless n.

unfortunatley i can't run nor want to run another wire. hmmmm im going to try and and stick the router dowstairs ill build a shelf or something. Im the only one really interested in tech haha. also you know the ethernet cable shaw gives you when they install? is this different then another cable? like what type is it? anyone know the cable type that comes with the dlink 4500 extreme n?

5e cable is fine. You won't need Cat 6 cable.

    edit:

I'm not sure the cable your cable guy gave you, but a lot of times, it is just extra cable they have after doing an install job.

Its most likely a CAT5e or CAT6 since its a gigabit router.

There should be small black writing on the wiring. It should say CAT5E PATCH.

All cables in the network must be gigabit capable or else it will drop down to 100mbps
