Im pretty sure you dont want a router but you want a switch. The reason is that the college dorms internet already hands out ip addresses and you dont want your router doing that also. Also, at my university it was actually against their terms of service to add a router to their network. Anyways, just get a switch (linksys makes nice ones) and you should be fine.

He still needs a router if he wants to go wireless. And not all universities prohibit wireless networks, but most of the larger ones do.

I recommend the Linksys Wireless G router, or Netgear Wireless G with MIMO.

Find out if your college allows wireless routers in the dorms, because I know I can't have them. If not, then just pick yourself up an ethernet router (which I currently have one available for sale if you need).

If it is allowed, then a Linksys WRT54GL would be a good choice. I use one and it rarely drops a connection.

I think the best G router is the Linksys WRT54GL

if you're not allowed to have a wireless router tho, I would buy a wireless N with gigabit LAN. just remove the antennae from the router so it can't go wifi :)

    Another vote for WRT54GL.
