    hi guys

i've just bought a belkin f5d7632uk4a (g) and when i connect everything and wait for some of the lights to become steady the adsl light always blinks which aparently means it's negotiating with my adsl line blah blah blah for the internet. So what should i do? i'm a complete noob at networking and this is my first modem/router..

    thanks

You need to put your login info into the routers. There should have been a setup cd to walk you through the process. Connect to the router and access the admin page, should be the same IP as the gateway. I'm not a fan of Belkin, I've had nothing but trouble from them.

Power cycle the router, and try again. Then disconnect and reconnect, check your Gateway IP and enter it as http://ipaddress. if that does not do a reset to factory and try again. If it still doesn't work take it back. You now see the reason I don't recommend belkin routers.

well i've tried with my original internet connected and when i type the gatewat ip then i see the admin page but when I change round and connect the router to by laptop it just seems to be offline.

check what I'm doing is right
1)plug all cable into places and one ethernet into my laptop
2)type gateway IP into browser (IE7 in my case)

    is that right?
also is there a minimum internet speed in order to be able to achieve wireless ie. as to be above 2mb........

    thanks again

You need to have the Wireless setup prior to using the wireless. ALL routers setup must be done through the Wired Lan side. Otherwise everytime you change a setting you will be bumped off line.

Since you user vista it prefers WPA(2) wireless security.

Do a search there are guides on this site.

But basicly, reset it back to factory setting.
Most have wizards that will launch to help you do the initial setup. Once connected, use the clone feature of the router to clone the MAC address of the nic port in to the router.

Once working correctly via wired, then proceed to the wireless. Change from OPEN to Sec/closed, select WPA(2) personal (tkip), enter random generated key 20+ chr using all printable chrr. Some do not like the " double quote" so remove those. Should allow them if they are handling the key properly. Save the key to a note pad and settings into the router. Then see if your NB will see it and connect when prompted paste the key in. A good key is like a full typing drill test or system crash strings.
