Hi, having bought myself a brand spanking new laptop I am needing to transfer copious amounts of stuff from my old computer to my new one.

Both are wireless enabled and i've tried getting them to connect using the ad-hoc setting via the Xp wireless connection window. But though i can create a new ad-hoc network it appears with a red cross through it and does not appear in the available networks section for the other computer.

Am i doing something obvously stupid? i'd appreciate if anyone can talk me through this, or direct me to a program that would make wireless file transfer simple to set up.
    Thanks

If you have that much data it would be better using a crossover cable.

As for wireless. I have not done an adhoc setup. But a couple of things to look at. Were you able to see the other computer in the network scan? Make sure they are both on the same channel. And both computer are in the same network group.

You may need to set them up as a static IP and subnet. Not having a DHCP server to assign IP's.

Don't use the Windows wizard to configure the workgroup. The easiest thing to do is right click on the My Computer icon, select properties, then go to the computer name tab and click "Change...". Enter the name of the workgroup you want to use. Do this on both computers. Make sure that the workgroup name is the same.

Are both laptops using the same version of XP?

My new laptop is running Pro and the old one using Xp Home. I can change the workgroup on both as you suggested but i'm not sure i've set up the ad-hoc connection correctly as it doesn't appear in the Available Networks section on either machine.
