I just got a new laptop with windows vista and I was wondering if there was a way to connect my xbox 360 to xbox live through my laptop since it is always online. I know the easiest thing would be to connect it directly to the router, but its downstairs and I'd rather not plop down $100 for the wireless adapter. Any help on this issue?

You can set up a static IP for your notebook, then turn on Internet Connection Sharing, hook up the 360 to the laptop with a crossover cable, and set up a static IP on the 360 with the laptop as the default gateway (you'll have to manually input DNS servers if you do this).
I did this when I first got my 360. It's a pain in the arse, but it is possible. -
thanks for an answer, but I have no idea how to do that, is there a place that offers a step by step set up for this?
-
I'll try to give as much of a walkthrough as I can remember, but if you Google "Internet Connection Sharing" you should pull up several guides that will fill in a few blanks that I have.
First, you'll need to set up a Static IP address in Vista. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network & Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections
Right-click on Local Area Connection and go to Properties
Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4)
Set the option to "Use the following IP address"
IP Address: 192.168.100.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: blank
Just to be safe, also set the options to "Use the following DNS Server Address"
Preferred: 208.67.222.222
Alternate: 208.67.220.220
Under the "advanced" tab, you need to check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." I can't recall, but you may want to also right-click on your wireless connection, go to properties, click the "advanced" tab and check the same box to allow other users to share the connection.
I don't recall exactly where to go on the 360 to set up static IPs (it's on the far-right blade), and I'm at work now, so I can't check, but you will need to input a static IP configuration like so:
IP address: 192.168.100.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.1
DNS1: 208.67.222.222
DNS2: 208.67.220.220
That SHOULD be all that it takes. -
thanks, I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight

Check back here when you get home...I'll update any mistakes or omissions I may have made
-
and this won't screw up my current internet settings on my laptop right?
-
As long as you connect via wireless. You'll have to reenable dynamic IP addresses (and disable sharing) if you ever want to use your ethernet connection as a primary connection, so you may want to print out a copy of the laptop-side directions just so you can quickly get back to your network connections screen to set your IP address to an automatic address (like I said, this is the pain in the arse way to do it. It's certainly doable, but there are much easier ways - and I count routing a CAT5 through the wall as easier).
-
yeah, you weren't kidding......hmmmm are there any cheaper alternatives than the $100 wireless 360 adapter?

Does your router not have wired ports? Just go wired if you need too.
There are also much cheaper wireless adapters for the 360 than the offical one, ebay has some for like 50$ -
My router is downstairs, while my Xbox is upstairs and there's no close by tv downstairs so its a pain in the ass lugging my xbox and a small tv by the computer every single time I want to get on live.....if I went the wired route I'd need over 50 feet of cable
-
I'll have to check ebay and other places, what brands work?
-
@selb7841: I think Linksys makes a wireless game adapter with an original XBox branding...Google/search ebay for "wireless game adapter" or "wireless console adapter." You're still going to be paying a ridiculous amount for something that costs $20 in a desktop, but at least it won't be quite as ridiculous as the $100 Microsoft charges.
Any "game adapter" should work. There's a bit of configuration required, but they tend to come with good documentation. -

something like this? do I just run an ethernet cord from my 360 to this and my linksys router should pick it up basically? -
@selb7841:
That's exactly it. You hook your 360 up to that adapter (and there may be a small amount of configuration outlined in the adapter's manual, but nothing like what I described above) and use that adapter to connect wirelessly to your router. -
just so you know, i have been using that adapter since xbox live first came out...now im using it on my 360. it works great! and it works on any console or pc too. its come in handy when i work on other peoples computers (my router is far like yours). anyways, it never has to be reset and its been running strong for years straight. i definitely recommend it.

thanks guys, I really appreciate the help

hey i used those ip address and dns etc and now the ip address is confirmed but the DNS is still failling, any ideas?
-
lol imagine a 50feet or 100feet running from upstairs to downstairs. not really good sight and u might break your nose when you trip over it. ;p

@jonneynz:
If those DNS numbers didn't work, call your ISP and find out what their preferred DNS servers are. I'm surprised the ones I gave didn't work, though...those are the OpenDNS.org servers - I've never had a problem with them. -
hey i just tryed contacting my isp well i serched up the DNS servers via web site this is the address http://telecom.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...HJlZmVycmVkIGRucyBzZXJ2ZXJz&p_li=&p_topview=1
lol oh didnt know was that long, im living in New Zealand if that makes any difference? i appreciate any help at all thank you -
Give their DNS servers a try. Just as a side note, it's pretty cool that the URLs for your ISP's DNS servers are named after Middle Earth characters.
