I currently have a server which I keep all my media content. I can connect my 360 to the server and stream any compatable format media fine via wireless N adapter on my 360. The issue is a lot of my stuff is 1080p mkv with 5.1 dts and it wont play this way. Is it possible to connect my 360 to my laptop wirelessly and use the media center extender and stream the content this way? Im not even sure if this is possible and if it is would the videos even play without skipping? Just wondering if anyone has any experience with anything like this or has a better idea. I was thinking of just putting together a mini htpc and hook it up to my tv but i figured I'd try to use the 360 if I can and save the money.

oh and I know i can convert the mkv's to play on the 360 but id rather not have to go through the process of converting all my videos.

my other option was try someting like the wd live tv+ but not sure if that will display the 1080p content well and I would need to get a usb wireless adapter for it...

You need to get a WDTV Live

It was my solution to the limited functionality of pretty much any media extender on the market, especially the consoles trying to pull double duty.

Also high bitrate 1080p is not going to stream over wireless not even a N based network unless your very lucky. Its best to go wired for 1080p or with the WDTV you can do what I do and connect a hard drive to it (external drive) and FTP the movies over and watch them later locally where there is no issues with performance and you get to have a safe 2nd copy of your movies incase your HDD failes where they are currently stored.

I know HD will stream to the 360 I do it myself. You just need a fast connection(I have the MS N adapter for my xbox and connect via 5ghz from my netgear router). I was more curious if I could do what I explained on my original post. I would try it out now but I'm awaiting a new PSU for my NAS. I know I can access my nas media in media center on my wireless laptop but just never tried streaming it from my laptop to my xbox using my laptop as sort of a wireless bridge.. not even sure if this will work
