If I'm sitting with my laptop right next to the wireless router, do you get a better & faster connection if you have a network cable and wireless going or just a network cable? Or doesn't it matter much?

It won't matter with the Internet. Your internet connection is slower than either method. If you are right next to the sucker or in the same room, I'd just leave it unplugged and wireless.

Now if you have other computers that you transfer files to in your network, then it might be a better idea to plug into the router.

absent a network fault, a wired connection will always be faster than a wireless connection. more trouble free too.

    Fixed.

Well, that is if you never move your laptop. Since it is a laptop and made to be mobile. Might as well use the wireless.

    True, sort of.

He did ask in the end, "or does it matter much" implying he wants a practical answer and not an ideal one.

Well its a semi-permanent laptop, so it really doesn't move very much. I was pretty sure that the wired connection would be faster than a wireless connection, even if you're right next to the router, I just wasn't sure if having both on at once would somehow cancel out each other's true potential because it was trying to use both and it wouldn't work as well.

But then again its showing my wired connection has 100Mb/s & wireless is 54Mb/s, yet my actual internet speed isn't even near those numbers so either will probably just work just as well, right? Or am I looking too far into this?

Like I said earlier. Your Internet speed is much slower than your wireless or wired connections.

So it won't matter. I'd leave it wireless, so in case you do want to move the laptop, you can still use internet.

    Ummm, Hijacking ftl.

You should make a new thread.

But I think your high speed modem is jacked.

Alright, I'll just leave the wireless connection running so if I do move it's all set up, no sense in adding more unnecessary wires if the speeds won't change.

Thanks a lot for the help! :)
