    Wireless woes....would you kindly assist me???

    I'm running an open, unsecured network in my home. Recently, I purchased an ASUS G1S with Vista Ultimate installed, and the wireless was working perfectly. Until about two days ago...

    My connection suddenly became erratic. It would still connect to the router - and still does to this day - but each time the connection is with "limited access". i.e. I have no actual connection to the internet.

    I'll list all of the relevant information and things I've tried to give you a better idea of what's going on:

    1) I ran ipconfig on my laptop. I get no information other than a restatement that I've ran ipconfig. (My brother tells me this means that I haven't been able to acquire an IP address from the router...that we're not "communicating."
    2) I checked the internet signal on the main PC that is physically connected to the router. Internet works fine there.
    3) I plugged my laptop directly into the router via an ethernet cable. No dice. The connection is recognized by my laptop, but there is no actual connection to the internet.
    4) I did a hard reboot and A/C unplug on the router. No dice.
    5) I ran a Windows Vista diagnosis of the problem...it advises to check my internet protocol bindings, which I've done (to the best of my ability) - every box is checked.
    5.1) It also says that the "network adapter Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN" is experiencing a driver or hardware related issue. I went to device manager; everything under my network adapters is "functioning normally". EXCEPT something called the "6T04 adapter".
    6) I reinstalled my LAN and Wireless LAN drivers from the G1S disc. No dice.

    I have no idea what to do at this point. The one other thing I would mention is that several days ago Avast antivirus located some "malware" that it couldn't remove. I'm wondering if this is somehow related...

    Could anyone please help???

    Well, it could be multiple things...

    1- go to internet explorer and go to your router settings (Default-192.168.1.1) and the default username and password is either Admin/Admin or Admin/Password. Go into your router settings and make sure that all the Wireless Settings are on and properly configured

    2- If 1 doesnt work or settings appear fine, on the back of the router, hit the reset button for 2 seconds, wait about 50 seconds and try to connect.

    3- If 2 doesnt work, hold down the reset button for about 10 seconds and you sould see all the lights go on and off. wait about a minute until all the lights are correctly lit or blinking. Try to connect.

    4- If 3 doesnt work, go to the manufactuers website (Your PC manufactuer and router manufactuer) look for your model and look for update drivers. Try to connect.

    5- If all fails get a new router and wipe your PC (Clear all files w/recovery disk)

    Try this...

    right-click the wireless icon in the tray at the bottom right and click Networking and Sharing Center.

    On the left youll see Manage Wireless Networks, click that.

    Highlight any thing in there and remove them. If theres nothing in there then im not sure how to fix it.

    Then after removing, try to connect to your wireless netowork again.

    Connect to the routers admin and see if you have DNS And Gateway info, showing you are connected to your ISP. If not the problem is with your router connecting to your ISP. Some ISP run 2-4 day on there lease renewal. My guess you did not clone the MAC address of the PC used to setup the account into the router.

    Turn off IP6 on your ports (vista). Vista has problems with WEP. Use WPA2 if you can, if not WPA (tkip or AES).

    Limited connection means NO DNS or Gateway info. Try manually entering these if nothing else works.

    If it's possible that others are connecting to your wireless router, or if you have lots of your own users, you may be running out of IP's. You can increase the number of allowed users in your router. We have this problem constantly in our open wireless networks at work.

    Hi everyone,

    I tried everything you said and basically found out that the problem was originating in my own laptop, not the router, etc.

    I just completed a format and fresh install. Everything is working fine now...

    I think it may have had to do with that malware that the antivirus software couldn't get rid of. My internet connection started having problems the moment I restarted after having discovered that malware.

    When it happens I just clik the "repair connection". The router is fine, it's the laptop. The router is just broadcasting and the settings don't change. Sometimes the connection is "low" and will trip the wireless to go into no signal and sometimes has a hard time recovering.
