So let's say I want to take my laptop with me to a place that doesn't have wireless setup's...such as a friend's house. How would I go about getting internet then? Would I have to subscribe to a separate internet account just for my laptop?

Only thing I can think of is dial up with a 800 number (PeoplePC $10 a month?) or an aircard from a cell phone provider.

Either plug into their ethernet or get as hiker said, an aircard from a cell phone provider.

Alternatively, what I have for on the go, is I use my phone as a bluetooth modem and dial in with my ISP's free dial up service offered to all cable customers. I'd assume you could do the same with a free 1000 hours of AOL or whatever too.

Do you need a cell phone to use the aircard? cause I don't have a cell phone. And I have DSL through AT&T,so if I got one of their aircards, would I be able to just connect to that? or would I have to get another service to go with it?

I'm assuming that your friend has at least a router and internet service.

If your friend's router is set with DHCP then you can connect in one of his router's Ethernet ports. If your friend has MAC filtering active, he has either disable it or add you MAC to the network.

You think that spikes the hair - I remember when we all happily accepted 300baud modems, with acoustic couplers: [IMG]

In fact, I distinctly recall being ecstatic the day one of my friends scored a 1,200baud modem, back in the days when this: [IMG]

    was considered high-tech.
