depends on the type of router you have. for most newbies the manufacturers include a setup cd. for the experienced users, we log into the router directly using an IP address punched into your internet browser, usually something like 192.168.1.1, where the user id is usually something like "admin" or "administrator" and the password is either blank or "password" or "admin" or "administrator"

if you use a standard cable modem, alot of the time it will work right out of the box without any setup, although I highly reccomend you going into the router setup and changing some of your passwords around and enabling wireless encryption

On most you must use a cat5 cable for the setup. Most routers do mini reboots which will know you off with wireless. Just remember that most ISP use MAC filtering of some sort to control access. So you will be required to clone the mac address of the wired port into the router. And write it down somewhere just encase you change pc's.

i use the MAC filter and WEP .and change the password, don't transmit your SSID.

    to find your MAC.
    1st start/run..type CMD...then ok it
    2nd at the c promt.type..ipconfig/all..then enter.
all the info on your Ethernet and wifi cards should be displayed.write it all down.your going to need it.

Yes, just set it up like any other router. But use wired for the init setup. Till you get every thing set, then switch over to your wireless.

Why would you need a desktop to set it up in the first place?

Yes, very easy. When you initially set up your deal you probably want to go wired, (modem to router to laptop/desktop). Once your pcs have linked up you then unhook the ethernet cable and go wireless. In my case I didn't need to do a cd set-up install.
SO you end up with your cable from the wall to the modem to your router. I have one cable from the router to my laptop that lays unused on the floor until I may need it to wireup.
Make sure that all pcs can operate wirelessly either with nic card or internal mini.
One caution, make sure you have the same WEP/WAP codes for all the pcs in the chain.. I couldn't make my all connect then realized I didn't enter the correct code.
