I just bought a new Linksys WRT54G wireless router and my computer is not detecting it. I am connected to the internet with a Linksys cable modem via a USB cable. Other than the USB cable I am sure that the other cables are positioned correctly for setting up this router.

Did you follow the installation disc that came with the router? Make sure you have wireless turned on on your laptop.

routers are usually 192.168.1.1 (modems are usually 192.168.0.1)

I installed Linksys EasyLink Advisor that came with it but it stops during the setup process when it tries to detect the router.

Maybe I should try a different brand router. This is my 2nd Linksys in 2 days to not even be detected and noone I know knows what is wrong.

that's interesting as up here in Canada, 192.168.0.1 is what you use to login to your router...as a general rule, you cannot login to your modem's here. would be interesting of you could tho! hack my Dlink 300G DSL modem and let me do...who knows what LOL!

anyhow, connect into your new Linksys router via a CAT5 cable and then see if you can login into it. while all these routers come with setup discs, I find them to be ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!! it's better to get an idea of what needs to be tweaked and then do it yourself. there's nothing better then manual settings!

The linksys wrt54g is not a very good router any more. The GL is the new part number for the original router. There is a registery hack that may need to be done before your vista will see some wireless routers. Some of the older models are not responding to a beacon request.

Search MS knowledge base for "wireless router not detected".

Could someone recommend me a non Linksys router that is $100 or less.
I want wireless connectivity for my Wii, DS, and future laptop.

    also

In getting a wireless router is my desktop able to remain wired or will I need a wireless card?

If you go with the GL version you can load dd-wrt linux firmware, which has more options. I would not but a router these day that can not run linux firmware. I like the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 but this brand at the current state is very hard to find due to a court injuction. Dlink and Netgear make good routers. I think the Dling DGL4300 is one of the best. If you go to smallnetbuilder.com they have charts giving you performace data.
