I have a Sager NP5790 with vista 64bit premium running..

whenever i connect with the wireless network my internet slows down to a crawl. around 10 kb/s if i DL. If i connect directly from my router with the Ethernet cable i get a normal speed. I have several other desktops and laptops in the house that do not have this problem. I've tried disconnecting all other sources from the wireless connection but it doesn't change anything. Any ideas what could be causing this problem and how to get a normal speed out of my wireless connection?

Sounds like a router issue. Being a Linksys wireless B, i'm imagining it is more than 4 years old now? As INC said, i would start with a firmware update.

Do other wireless devices connect at normal speeds?

Did the problem exist before Vista, or has it been tested with XP?

All your device drivers are installed on the Sager?

These speeds are even when you're right next to the router?

Have you tried connecting to a wireless hotspot/buddies router to confirm the Sager is not the issue?

vista works on my other laptop, 3 other wireless devices get normal speeds, it's about 2 years old, i made sure the drivers were installed, my laptop is 10 feet from the router, and i'm gonna go check a buddies router in a little bit when he gets home i guess.

What type of encryption are you using? Most of those early B routers didn't plan for encryption being used at all. Using WEP or WPA creates huge overhead. Some routers can actually handle WPA better than WEP.

^^^ agreed that could def be a issue...

imo i would think about getting into a cheap g router at least.. many great ones for under 50$ now... that should def improve your setup.. my recc are the buffalo units whr-hp-g54 or the newer g125 (i use the g54's myself and LOVE THEM), my older linksys (non g or gl) was slower then dirt i did nothing at the time more than swap it out and it was a huge difference
