11b hardware is outdated, the 11g hardware brings higher speed. Both use the 2.4ghz bandwidth. Range is a function of many factors, Antenna gain, walls, snr, other wireless devices (phones), appliance .... If you are setup on one end of the house trying to go to the other side, via through a ref, furnace, TV .. Trying to shoot through the computer case, will kill it too. These can kill a signal pretty fast. If your using the stock 2dbi antennas, a 7 dbi high gain would be a start. If you have a NB download and use netstumbler to survey your house. This will help you under stand where your loosing the signal at. Use a drawing of the house and record the data, it will pinpoint the problem areas, make sure the nb is not being blocked by your body back to the router. And some routers give you control of the radio's power.

Good luck, it can be a trying process. 11n hardware has better senitivity but gives you no more range than a good 11g hardware. It does boost speed, but would require you to upgrade all of your hw, $$$
