    Hey all,

You've been so helpful in the past that I thought I'd give this question a shot for my friend, even though she doesn't have a laptop!

She and her husband would like to move their desktop computer into their family room (currently in a more formal living room), but their DSL line comes into the living room. Hubby had bought a d-link di-524 and a USB connected wireless access point for a work laptop while away from home.

So, they plugged the USB port into the tower, and went through the steps to connect the router. Worked for hours on end last night, calling both Verizon (their ISP) and D-link, but nothing works. I took my laptop over this morning. They actually did get a wireless network up and running, but the modem doesn't seem to want to talk to the router, or something. My laptop detected the network fine, and the lights on their DSL modem all look great and functional - just keep getting the message that the server can't be found, and they need to check their connection.

I know that they got online again for a while just hardwiring into the modem this morning, and a Verizon rep was able to take remote control and do something about a "bridge." Now, though, neither the wireless or hardwiring works to get a connection. We did absolutely try unplugging, plugging, restarting, all that stuff... Any thoughts? Any way for them to fix it without ANY internet connection?

    Thanks!

Okay, this can be tough to diagnose. A test to check whether the comuter will communicate with the router is simple however. In IE, while "connected" to the router NOT via Cat 5E cable type in the router's address. If you can get to admin you have successfully set up the router.

Possible problems with the internet is if they are WAP/WEP encrypted then if you miss 1 key it will not send information but you may appear connected.

What I would suggest to your friend is to RESET the router back to default settings. Upon resetting check if you can connect to the internet after setting up PPoE settings etc. If you still cannot connect, try changing the channel that the router broadcasts on. I find that 11 often works the best. Some cards are a little bit of a pain in the arse.

    Good luck, report back.

Thanks for the suggestions. With me at home on my notebook, reading the d-link help pages, she was absolutely able to get into the admin pages through an Explorer window. We did, even, get the "status" tab on the router set-up to claim that there was an IP address assigned and that the DHCP was connected.

However, she still couldn't get through to Verizon's server. D-link's help mentioned that SBC Global users of DSL had to disable all Yahoo based software - which she has through Verizon - but that didn't help, either. It looks to me now like it's definitely just a Verizon issue - maybe they need to register her MAC address or something? Does that sound right, since everything else appears to be working OK? Frustrating, to be sure... :) Any more thoughts or anyone's experience with Verizon DSL would be helpful. Thanks again.

on your router have you pressed the "clone mac address" button or correctly entered it into the field provided. whne i go my d link. i just press clone mac address and i has never failed since then, that was a year ago... i would suggest adding encryption to it latter...

if you have pressed the clone mac address\typed it in) it should work, and if not then you will have to call your isp.

    good luck!

Oh, yeah, they did that. We really tried about everything, as far as I can tell. She did finally uninstall the router and the Verizon software, then, by just reinstalling Verizon's stuff, got back online hardwired with her ethernet cord and no router. I think they're about ready to try another router. My di-624 worked fine right out of the box, but I have a cable modem rather than the DSL, so it's just enough different that I couldn't figure it out. They have also considered that their computer is just too old. It's running XP, but it's not new. She's hoping that she might get a new notebook out of it, so all is not lost. ;)
