    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the Inspiron 6400 off of Dell Canada. First off, I have to say that I'm virtually clueless about internet connections... Anyway, I'm moving to a university dorm in the fall, and obviously I want internet connection. The university itself is a hotspot, so I'm thinking that means I can connect anywhere on campus, wirelessly, as long I have an internet card...thing. The wireless network card Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps) comes standard with the Inspiron, but the wireless routers cost extra - would I need a router to connect to the internet too? Also, what use is a Bluetooth network card?

The dorm I am staying in is farther away, however, and my friend who is there already says that you need an ethernet cable to connect to the internet... Does an ethernet cable come standard with most notebooks (i.e. Inspiron 6400), or must I purchase it on the side? If so, will any old cable purchased from Dell be good enough?

One last question, if you're still with me... Another accessory for the Inspiron 6400 is a Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter and Hotspot Detector. If the notebook already comes with a wireless network card and everything installed, what good will this external device be? I apologize for my inneptness. Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

You need to know more about what the university offers. If they blanket the campus in wireless you'll be fine with just the Intel or Dell wireless card. You'd only need the router if you want to set up wireless in your dorm room. Otherwise you can use an Ethernet cord to plug in. You can buy one from any office supply or electronics store.

Bluetooth, if you're asking you generally don't need it. It's a short range wireless protocol used to let devices communicate with each other. You could get a wireless mouse that uses Bluetooth for instance. There are however, cheaper wireless mice that don't use Bluetooth, that's just one example.

You don't need an external WiFi adaptor since you will have it integrated already.

Once you get to your school they will have a booklet that will explain how to connect to thier wifi network. GL, if you have any problems after you get there, ask us for help :)
