    Hi,

I'm having a problem with my wireless connectivity with a new Sony VGN S270P (UC). I have called the Sony Service Center ann all their efforts did noting to change the problem. My machine has Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG wireless card and at my office I have Linksys WRT54G. I also called Linksys but after traveling to a different location, also with similar configuration Linksys WRT54G I had the same issue.

The issue is that the communication speeds goes up and down from 1Mbps to 5MBps with no obvious reasons.

Here is my setup: Windows XP Professional, Intel M processor 2.0 GHz, 1GB, 40GB HD , Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG + Bluetooth, and my wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G (54Mbps).

I found out that another member (isu07) of this site has identical problem so I will quote him shamelessly:
My “wireless speed randomly drops from 54Mbps to speeds as low as 1Mbps inconsistently. It will always return to normal but it happens so often that is is really frustrating because it makes my internet applications stop working.”
“Drivers are updated. As a matter of fact” “Is anyone else having this problem? I am using the Wireless Network Connection Status window that you get when you double click the wireless tray icon to watch my speed.”

” I've tweaked the settings a bit and have been testing the connectivity with the new settings. I made "Power Management" and "Transmit Power" both maximum in the adapter's settings, but I still had the problem.”

Isu07 claims that this happens to him only when the AC is connected. I have not tried it but even if I did it is still the same problem.

”Any ideas what is causing this? If it is the "power saving feature" then shouldn't other people experience the same thing?”

I would like to see if anyone else can reproduce this problem or if it is just me.

    yoin

IntelPRO/Wireless2200b/g is part of the Centrino marketing gimmick.
Intel does not make wlan chips. It relies on subcontractors.
Whereas most routers have Broadcom wlan chipset.
It would be best to go for Broadcom wlan card when ordering your laptop.

Go to the INtel wireless site. Download, install and run their Wireless Pro ID program. That will tell you the version of driver you are running. I will bet it is 8.10 or so. NOw go back to the Intel site and download the newest driver and install it. That may make a big difference. Many others are having issues such as this and worse. For example the 2200B/G drivers cause a Blue Screen with an error giving the N22_5-1sys.exe driver error, total freeze up, necessary re-boot. It happens with Eudora email when sending a reply and other programs too.
A refresh of the driver fixes it!

The issue could be 2200BG card's compatibility with Router.

I have zt3000 with the same card. I have solved the problem after changing router.

I had problems with my 2200BG and my WRT54G. MY speed was always good but I would lose the network and be unable to reconnect. Downloaded Intel drivers and XP SP2. Seems alright now but it is still my first day. I am still a wireless newbie but 1 to 5mbs seems low to begin with.

My Netgear WGT-624 gives me full 54 mbps consistently.

I have got Broadcom 54G card + bluetooth card in my laptop

The signal strength is excellent throught the house + dozen
other neighbhoring networks also appear at good strength.

first of all there is no compatibility issues with the 2200BG and the WRT54G i have those 2 and my lappy works flawlessly

sony may have connected the Main and Aux antenna wires incorrectly, the wire wire goes to MAIN and the Black wire goes to AUX, there is a diffrence, i built my asus with the wire switch around and i had a really crappy connection. i switched them and it was blazing fast.

2nd if you have bluetooth turn it off for troubleshooting, bluetooth can kill the connection quality between your lappy and AP, bluetooth 1.2 has solved the interference problem. im pretty sure sony hasn't upgraded their notebooks to bluetooth 1.2 or 2.0.

3rd set the preamble to long on your router, this generally improves connection quality.

Try out the version 8.1 drivers from the intel site. They seem to be more stable so far for me.

I have the same problem, but with a Compaq Presario v2000. The connection doesn't drop, but it does not recieve or send information. It is the most annoying problem I've ever had. Setting "Power Management" to maximum does not work. I've rolled back the drivers and that does not work either. It is not router specific, it is a problem with the drivers or card. I'm still looking for a solution, so any suggestions would help.

I guess you can add me to the list of people who have problems with 2200BG and Linksys Wireless G router! For me what happens is AIM and Yahoo will periodically disconnect me and reconnect me automatically every now and then (random and seperate intervals for both services), also Listen.com's Rhapsody will sometimes get stuck as well.

I am downloading the latest drivers now to see if that maybe fixes the issue.

This is the 2nd laptop with this wireless card that is having identical problems.

Were having the same exact problem with our Motion M1400 Tablet PC which has the Intel 2200BG mini-PCI card. It is unable to maintain a stable wireless connection to our Cisco Aironet WAP in the office, nor is it stable on my Linksys wireless router at home. Have tried all of the aforementioned "fixes" with no improvement.

We also have an older Motion M1300 in the office (which has a Broadcom wireless card) and it has had no problems with intermittent connection drops.

I, too, am becoming more & more certain that this is an issue with the 2200BG and/or its drivers.

I had the same problems: Same Intel Wireless 2200BG card with a connection going from 55 to 48, 5, 2 and even 1 mbps. I tried a suggestion I read earlier here: going back to drivers 8.1.0.28

I removed the latest drivers and installed the ones from:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/detail_desc.asp?strState=LIVE&ProductID=1637&DwnldID=7819

This definately was an improvement. I did it last night and am still testing. I now have almost permanently 54mbps. Sometimes it goes to 48 for about 10 seconds and than it is back to 55 again.

So that's great! (Very weird ofcourse that an older driver actually works better).

However, I do have some occasionaly disconnects (when connected to MSN for instance). So that is not right at all, but I still find it a huge improvement!

I am pretty convinced it is all about the software though, not the hardware.

My Intel ProSet Wireless nework work fine on my new Dell. I'm tyring to get an i-book with an Airport Express card synced with the network with no luck. It recognizes the network, but does not accept the password. Is this the Encryp Key? Are there some other settings on the Airport card which needed to be changed? The i-books control panel wants the IP address - but that's for the internet right? Any ideas out there?

I'm having the same problem with this scenario (Cisco AP1200 + HP laptop with 2200BG Intel wifi cards). I've contacted with Cisco , Intel without solution. The problem is focused with the Intel cards , and the only solution at the moment is to force the cards to work at 802.11B mode.

I hope Intel fix this bug

    any solution?

Same problem here with a new Sony Vaio FS550. I noticed this problem right out of the box because I have 4 other computers connected to my WRT54G and their speeds are blazing. This sony is the only one with the Intelpro 2200bg card, others have Linksys 54g USB & PCI adapters, Hp ze5570us P4 notebook has a Broadcom54, and a 12 dollar Trendnet 54g pcmcia card in my old HP P3 (this is a great card!).

The first thing I noticed was the lack of packets being sent/received. All of my other computers will have sent thousands of packets just from powered up. This Sony will have maybe 100 if it's lucky.

It's a shame Intel can't get it fixed (and it's definitely broke...)
I may have to start using my 12 dollar pcmcia card in the sony.

Not sure if this is an issue with the card but I am using the Windows Zero Config to connect to the network/internet. I read at another forum that Intel offers a connection utility software. Anyone here using this software and having the speed problem?

Hi all, new here. Thinking about getting an Asus Z71V, but that's another story...

Anyone have experience with Intel's 2915 a/b/g card? I know wireless "a" is somewhat outdated so an a/b/g card is unnecessary, but if the 2915 performs well I would be tempted to just spend an extra $20 on it. That is, only if it will work more reliably than the 2200. So how about it, anybody know if the 2915 holds a more reliable signal than the 2200?

Good question biker!! I would be interested in knowing if there is "any" replacement wireless G card available for the Centrino (other than the one biker mentioned) and if so, do they fix the slowness problem?

I have the Intel 2915 A/B/G and I am experiencing a similar issue. My connection will drop from 54mbps to 24mpbs and the internet will "freeze up" and then stop working when it drops to 24mbps. It will also fluctuate to other random speeds(12, 2, 1, 36, 48). It will then start working again 10-15 seconds later, but it will continue to drop the connection at random times.

I am also using the Linksys WRT54G. I am thinking that there is a compatibility issue with the Linksys routers and the Intel wireless cards. I have not tried the card with any other routers, just the WRT54G. It is very annoying though and I am probably going to just get my card switched to the Atheros.

I found this on another forum, it is a possible reason why the Linksys router and the Intel wireless don't work together with the new drivers.

Here is what was said about the issue:

"I had the same issue with my medion 95400 centrino laptop. Many speed drops and disconnect when using the 9.1.0.9 PROset driver. It is related to the very agressive Power Save Polling this driver does. When it gets the chance it will drop speed or even disconnect. The WRT54G is not so good in reacting to the power save requests and keeping the connection at full speed (or even alive).

My problems were solved by installing the 8.1.1.0 intel driver for the 2200BG and setting the 2200BG to max. perfomance in device manager (properties, advanced).

Now constant and excellent connection at 54 Mbps. Costs a bit more battery power, but who cares."

Thanks for the info!! I installed the ver. 8 firmware you posted and the connection appears to be more stable. Speed does stay at 54 90% of the time however I have seen it down to 36.....once. Over all it is a big improvment and this firmware does support WPA security. I am using the Windows Zero Config.

I noticed my Uniwill 259IA3 does the same thing, and I have the intel 2200 card as well. I tried the latest drivers from Intel but it didn't fix the problem so I went back to the original drivers. I noticed my transmit power is always at 10mW and my signal strength varies from 60~90% and quality is at 80% I set the transmit power to max but it didn't make any difference. I'll try the newest drivers again and see if it will actually change the transmit power like it's supposed to.

Hi all. I also have a similar problem with my FS570, intel pro 2200 card, using a D-link 624 as router/ap.
I tried to download the ver 8 driver from the intel website, but I'm having a hard time installing it. When I try to click on autorun.exe, it tells me to delete the proset. Is there a step that I'm missing? Cupcars, did you have difficulty installing the version 8 as well with your fs550?
How about using a usb adapter (Dlink DWL-G132) for now until Intel or Sony comes up with a fix? Will that work?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I have a problem with my Netgear 32-bit PCI WG311 v2 network adapter. It often disconnects. Sometimes when the icon shows signal strength is good or low, Rx Packets/s and Tx Packets/s are 0. Sometimes after I scan the network and connect again, it only works several minutes. My system is Win XP. Router is SMC. Do I need to find new drivers online? Now my internet really makes me boring.[?]

I am having the same problem with my notebook and the LinkSys WRT54G.

I installed the IntelPRO 2200BG myself to the miniPCI slot. I could only get my connection up one time, when I forced everything to 801.b. But that connection did not last long - it was dead a few minutes later. I could never resurrect my connection again. Will try the older driver (?v8.0 or 8.1, where can I get it?).

Is there anything to do with the hardware version? Mine is 0.1.4. Maybe those of you who use the newer hardware will do better.

I have read in another forum that IBM has released an updated driver (version 9.0.1.29) for the intel pro 2200 b/g which can be found in their website. I'd like to know if anyone here has tried it yet, and if there are any issues, before i go and try it. Somehow, it's not in the intel website yet, nor in the sony's. Thanks in advance.

There is 2200bg driver version 9.0.1.21 on IBM.com

    Find it at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/1ywc25ww.exe

I'm trying it right now. Tell me if you have any success with it.

Update: These drivers fix the problem. I've been stable for a long long time now.

I just tried that. No luck at all.

Could I upgrade the hardware version of my 2200BG card? Mine is 0.1.4.

I have just installed the 9.0.1.21. I noticed that I lost the proset tool on my taskbar. How do I regain it? Thanks for the help.

No luck with upgrading or no luck meaning the problems persists even after installing the new drivers? I have not had any problems with them so far.

Has anyone else tried 9.0.1.21? I haven't had any problems with it. It seems like they've fixed the problem.

Guaping: I don't use the toolbar, so I don't know. Do the drivers fix the connection dying/dropping problem for you?

Update: I found how to get your ProSet toolbar to show. The new driver installer, by default, makes the ProSet toolbar NOT show in the system tray. To fix this, go to Start-->Programs-->Intel Network Adapters-->Intel(R) PROSet for Wireless and then just click the "Show in tray icon" (in the bottom left). Good luck with the drivers.

I have tested the 9.0.1.21 driver last night and it was very stable. i was getting 36 Mbps despite being away from my D-link 624 (firmware 2.50) about 100 feet away, 2nd floor, opposite end of the house, and thru several walls. I was dropping to 1 Mbps before with the previous driver. So i would say this is definitely an improvement (knock on wood).
DeltaRage, I don't have the proset initally installed on my fs570; I only got it after dowloading the driver version from the Intel website. so i don't have the folder containing the Intel network adapters. I'll settle for the wireless zero config for now, until I discover it in my computer, or when Intel releases their own version of this driver. Thanks for the help.

here is the issue, i ve been trying to fix this problem when it first showed up two weeks ago. I tried to use windows to manage it and intel software as well but i ve experienced that nothing changed.
What i think but it's a personal opinion, the problem is not with the card neither with the drivers... but it goes along with SP2 (service pack 2) or might it might as well being a matter of the firewall.
My suggest is to look first at your firewall configuration and check out your configuration, then switch back to service pack 1a
i have a sony s3xp and i personally can't do this since the cpu is given to you without cds but with a recovery partition. It won't let me uninstall sp2.
i have now managed to get it work a little better having windows to manage the connection and disabling the firewall on certain connections.
But still i get a drop after several minutes... kind of annoying...
The hardware and the drivers work out extremely well under linux

Hope this will help ya, Ap3iron

I have also tried the ibm's latest version 9.0.1.21, but that didn't work for me.

I have another hypothesis: the problem is related to the different subcontractors of the wirelesscard.

Why do I say that? It is because it happens that I have 3 different 2200BG cards, and I could test that with the same setting (the same spot in the room, the same hardware configuration, the same encryption method). And now I have found this out:

Card 1: Hardware/Firmware version 0.1.4 (made in China): (0-1)/5 bars signal strength
Card 2: Hardware/Firmware version 2.2.3 (made in Malaysia): (2-3)/5 bars signal strength
    Card 3: Hardware/Firmware version 6.0.3 (made in ???): 5/5 bars signal strength

I have no idea where is the ???, but I guess it is either Taiwan or Korea. The latest one is built-in with my notebook HP Compaq nx7010. The previous two are OEM versions I purchased over the counter (note: I have 3 laptops).

Any idea? Please shout out which version you have when you quote your problem, so that we may know whether the signal problem is a hardware or software problem.

For your info, the 3 cards are not identical, for instance, with regard to the wireless channel numbers:

    Card 1: 11
    Card 2: 13
    Card 3: 13

I do not know whether the channel number would have any significant impact on the signal strength (I guess there is one - channels 12 and 13 should have less RF interference), but it should be clear that even for the same 2200BG card, there are many different versions which have different properties.

tch64: I have 6.1.3 Hardware version, running 9.0.1.21 and my wireless is running perfectly now. I'm on channel 11.

    DeltaRage:

What I meant the 3 cards were different, with respective to the channel numbers, was the _TOTAL_ number of channels one could choose. There were 11 channels for the first card, vs 13 channels for the 2nd and 3rd card.

When I did the testing, I used the same setting for the 3 cards (I tested channels 7,8,9,10 and 11) for a fair comparison. Since my AP did not support channels 12 and 13 (LinkSys WRT56G), these 2 channels were not tested anyway. Now I use channel 10. But for your information, if you use WPA-PSK, it will determine the optimal RF without regard to the channel you choose. For example, you could set the channel to 7 in the AP and channel 11 in your laptop, and yet they could talk to each other. Of course in order not to confuse you, I use channel 10 for all my equipment right now. *I did not try the channels below 7, because it is said that the RF interference with home cordless phones and microwave is significant.

    =======================================================================

For your info, the 3 cards are not identical, for instance, with regard to the wireless channel numbers:

    Card 1: 11
    Card 2: 13
    Card 3: 13

Okay, I understand now. (My card has a maximum of 11 channels.) I'm still at a loss to explain how you continue to have problems with 9.0.1.21 however. After upgrading the driver I have had no dropped connections or degraded signal quality. The problem of intermittent severe signal degradation to the point of no transfers is now gone. Are you saying that, for you, this problem persists even with the x.x.x.21 drivers?

Hi, I have the same problem as you all have, connection randomly drops for now obvious reason.
I've tried all drivers suggested here, and the one downloaded from ibm site worked flawlessly for about 1½ day, then all the sudden it stopped, and now I'm seriously thinking of throwing out my 5 days old laptop through the window (note: I'm on 3'rd floor).
Personally I think it's really strange that Intel can sell so many cards of this type .. when they obviously doesn't work.

Anyway, where do you see the hardware version on your Intel card? Is it possible to see in windows somewhere, or do you have to open up the computer and look at the card?

stenkross: What is the problem with your connection though. Will it simply not connect? Or does it stay connected and yet intermittently fail to send/receive data? As in, by "drop" do you mean that the connection dies and it has to reconnect, or that it stays connected but simply does not work now and then?

To check the hardware version go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->(Under "Hardware" tab")Device manager-->Network Adapters-->Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection-->Look under "Advanced" tab, and it will say in the bottom box. (I know there is a faster way, but it's more difficult to explain.)

I have not had ANY problems with the driver. Everything works flawlessly, so I'm not sure what the problem could be. What kind of notebook do you have?
