    basically i've moved house intot a shared house. At teh moment we're running just a wired internet connection through a modem to one computer. what i want to do is set up a wireless network in the house . I was looking at the linksys wrt54g but htere was a post that said that i would need a modem too? What i want is jus to plug the wire coming into the hosue into one box that will generate a wireless signal. Also would like to have a wired network available for our desktops.
    If anyone can shed some light on the best to get and if the wrt54g would allow me to do this (and not use the modem at the moment), that would be great.

    buying tonight so quick replies please

    cheers

    I'm a little confussed but heres what I think you want to know: Your using DSL or Cable I'm presuming if so the connection has to first go to DSL or Cable Modem then connect the router then computers either wired or wireless .

    The current situation:

    Wall(DSL/Cable) -> Modem -> Computer #1

    You want:

    Wall(DSL/Cable) -> Modem -> Wireless Router -> Computers #1,2,3,etc. and Laptops #1,2,etc.

    You just need to get a wireless router pretty much.

    I think a router has no modem however a Gateway is an all-in-one unit. A Gateway has the modem and router and firewall build in.

    Since I live in the UK we have the choice between a USB modem that my dad had at the start of the DSL internet at my house then I disided to go and buy a gateway so all of the computers can connect to the internet. So my point the UK has only two options
    1. USB modem
    2. Gateway

    Some people can get a cable modem then a router but you need cable and only 50% of the UK can/could access cable.

    Quick Question,

    A little bit off topic but why don't cable modems have wireless built-in. Or do they exist? If they do, any good links?

    they exist. they're on the shelf right next to the wireless routers. that's why usapatriot only has 1 box; a router+"modem"

    ^ I guess so, mines a Linksys WRT54GS.

    But before I had the router, my desktop was connected to the internet via a ethernet cable from outside.

    No modem.

    I dunno, I think Bellsouth had layed down some fiber optic cables a couple years back...

    Question:

    Do you have to have a wired connection that goes:

    Cable -> Cable Modem -> Wireless Router -> Desktop/computer

    in order to broadcast a wireless signal that notebooks can pick up?

    Is it possible to go from cable -> modem -> router ----- and then not have the router physically connected to anything (apart from the modem, of course), but still broadcast a signal that you can pick up?

    Sorry for the n00blish question --- wireless is new territory for me.

    Yes. You can have the router be completely wireless except for the WAN connection to your modem.
