Some of my signals have an icon where it is between a laptop and a router: These allow me to connect to the internet.

Other signals show a connection between two laptops, and dont allow me to connect to the internet. What is this type of connection? Would I have to have a special wireless card to use these?

BTW im using the standard windows wireless software.
