I'm about to sell my desktop and am trying to find a good basic tutorial on how to set up a home network with several laptops and a set up for cable modem without a computer connected to the modem

Did you want a wired or wireless network? or both?

I assume your cable modem is currently connected via USB which isnt an 'always on connection'

What model is your current modem?

Cable -> Modem -> Router/Switch -> PCs (wired and wireless)

Is that what you're looking for?
