Brand new HP HDX 18 with an INtel 5100 wireless n card
Router is a bit old WRT54G Ver 2 with latest firmware
    Vista Home Premium

The wireless connection is intermittent. what is odd is that i can bring up a command prompt and ping my ip address confirming it is actually connected. I can ping Google and it is also fine.

Yet Internet explorer tells me I am not connected. Sometimes I can actually send and receive email but usually I cannot. If I leave the system on it will go into this mode every time after a an hour or so. If I disconnect and reconnect to the same wireless network, sometimes that works and sometimes not.

I have another older Dell laptop, Wireless G that works flawlessly on this network. I have spent hours on the phone with HP and the Linksys chat sessions with absolutely no help.

Also, I have uninstalled all of the security software and turned off the WIndows firewall. Made no difference.

First thing to try is to set your wireless card to wireless g mode (the default is almost certainly mixed mode).

    Does that make a difference?

Wireless n is turned off. I had it set up for a/b/g mode. I just changed it to g only and will see if that makes a differnece. I also changed from WEP to WPA last night after reading some previous posts about WEP causing loss of connection. I have had a stable connection this morning for two hours straight. Knock on wood.
