I hope I am posting in the right area...I am looking at buying an HP ZD8220us as a desktop replacement (however will be keeping my current desktop for my son). I have direcway satellite for internet service (no DSL or hardline cable where I live) and will be connecting the notebook via wireless router that is already set up in my house. (it's a linksys wireless g)
I would like to know if anyone who has this notebook (or one that is comparable to it) have had any issues with connectivity to the internet and approximately how far away can you be and still have decent speeds on the internet? Please keep in mind, I have never had a notebook before and I know enough about computers and hardware stuff to get me into trouble ;) Any help would be appreciated. I haven't bought the notebook yet, just doing some research before I make the final commitment.

If you order the zd8000 with wireless, then you will be able to connect to the wireless network, no problem. I have had 3 laptops with wireless, 2 Dells and an Acer, and I have no problem connecting to my wireless access points (netgear router, comcast cable).

On an open field, depending on the router, you can expect up to a 300-ft range. Indoors, through, say two or three walls, expect 150 feet or so, although at reduced signal strength.

Ok, that's what I hoped to hear! The ZD8220us comes with wireless and bluetooth (<- which I am quite new to). I know that the direcway is not near as fast as DSL but a whole lot better than dial up so I'm sure that I'll probably lose a little bit in connection speed with the wireless but hopefully it won't be enough to make a too much of a difference. Thanks for the info!

I am on 400k dsl which is the same speed as Direcway. It is great for surfing and the occasional download, but it is not for heavy downloadiing. Defintely better than dial-up. I think the zd8000 uses a Broadcom wireless card which is better than the Intel one. Good Luck.

I don't usually do any heavy downloading on it, just music, software updates, etc. I plan on keeping my desktop for my son so it will be available for any big downloads that I may need to do. Thanks!
